Communities build technology that matters
Open source is the foundation of running modern applications in the cloud, which is why we are thrilled to be committers, maintainers, foundation members and consumers of the most exciting open source projects across cloud and data.
Your partner to open communities
IBMers are deeply engaged with open source projects and communities – in terms of both governance and code contribution - to ensure the projects address the needs and requirements of companies running demanding workloads in production.
Making it easier to work with open tech
With Bluemix we deliver and run many open source projects as-a-service across public, dedicated and on-premises deployment models. Focus on what differentiates your business, not operating infrastructure and databases.
Open is better together
Many open source projects are valuable in isolation, but they become even more powerful in combination. We are not only delivering open tech in Bluemix, we’re helping drive upstream integration capabilities into the communities.
Proud member of the open community
In addition to being a top contributor across many of the most popular open source projects in the industry, IBM is also a proud board member of OpenStack, Cloud Foundry Foundation, Node.js, Spark, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Open Container Initiative, Open API, jQuery, ODPi and the Cloud Standards Customer Council.

IBM contributions to open
IBM contributes to many existing open source projects and we have started several others. In the cloud space, projects we created include:
- Eclipse
- Node-Red
- System ML
- OMR Runtime
- Quarks
- OpenWhisk
IBM and Spark
Spark brings unprecedented speed and performance to analytic applications. At IBM, we offer Spark as-a-service in Bluemix and are embedding Spark into other capabilities, such as DataWorks. Through our partnerships with industry leaders in education and entrepreneurship, we are working to bring Spark to over a million data scientists worldwide.
The open data layer
Modern apps and services are powered by a combination of SQL and NoSQL databases. NoSQL is particularly relevant for cloud native apps for both managing large data volumes and simplifying development. Bluemix offers production support for open source databases including:
- MongoDB
- CouchDB
- Redis
- TinkerPop
- PostgreSQL
