The Celebration of Service is a global, year-long event that honors IBMers' longstanding commitment to community service. All IBMers are invited to participate by pledging eight hours or more of volunteer time during 2011. IBM is supporting their efforts with resources and tools to make community service easy and effective, and with a new program of grants for the schools and community organizations where IBMers volunteer.
Because volunteering engages and improves the communities where IBMers live and work, social computing is a powerful way to enhance the Celebration of Service by forging wider, deeper connections with communities worldwide. Participants can use social networks to share their volunteer experiences, as well as to connect and collaborate with other volunteers.
On Demand Community
IBM's global volunteer initiative has over 150,000 participants, and provides the foundation for the global Celebration of Service. Read more about the celebration, explore volunteering resources, and make your own pledge of volunteer service at On Demand Community.

How to share your service activities
Share your pledge
IBM employees and retirees can pledge volunteer service via On Demand Community, while others can make a pledge at the IBM100 site. At the end of the pledge process on the IBM100 site, use the social sharing toolbar to share your pledge with others. Depending on the sharing option you choose, you may need to add the appropriate hashtags to help identify your activity. See the hashtag directory sidebar for proper hashtag usage.
Submit pictures to document your service activity
On the IBM100 site, use the built-in uploader tool to submit pictures of your volunteer activities. The tool will request all the information needed to make your pictures easy to find, and will upload them to a central repository on Flickr.com. Once approved, your pictures will be displayed on Flickr, in various areas of the IBM100 site, and on a global interactive map we are planning to release later this year.
Try to submit pictures throughout the course of your activity to create a compelling story, from your initial idea all the way to the impact you had on the community.
Before uploading a picture, make sure you have the approval of the people and venues being depicted.

Join the conversation
The Centennial Conversations area of the IBM100 site aggregates all the conversations happening around the Centennial in real time. Its powerful search features let you quickly hone in on the topics that matter to you, see who is talking, jump into the conversations and make connections with like-minded individuals.
Centennial Conversations will automatically aggregate any tweets containing the #IBM100 hashtag. If you have a personal blog, consider registering it with Centennial Conversations to include your posts as well.
The Centennial Conversations aggregator will launch on February 1, 2011.
Get your family and friends involved
If appropriate, encourage your family and friends to help you with your service activity and ask them to share their experiences on their own social networks. Make sure they also use the proper hashtags (see Hashtag directory in the sidebar).
IBMers will organize volunteer activities with colleagues at On Demand Community, but can expand their outreach to the public by using free online collaboration tools such as Facebook Groups, Google Apps, Meetup or Lotus Connections.
Keep listening
The Celebration of Service will generate a wealth of unique stories from people who are each deeply committed to a specific cause. It's a perfect opportunity to find and connect with like-minded individuals using the social listening techniques described in the Social Enablement section of this site.
